Moscow

Moscow is the capital city and the most populous federal subject of Russia. The city is a major political, economic, cultural and scientific center in Russia and in Eurasia. According to Forbes 2012, Moscow has the second largest community of billionaires in the world. Moscow is the northernmost megacity on Earth, the most populous city in Europe,[14][ HP Pavilion DV6-6B75CA Battery

Moscow is situated on the Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia. In the course of its history the city has served as the capital of a progression of states, from the medieval Grand Duchy of Moscow and the subsequent Tsardom of Russia to the Soviet Union. Nine years later, in 1156, Prince Yuri Dolgorukiy of Rostov ordered the construction of a wooden wall, the Kremlin, which had to be rebuilt multiple times, to surround the emerging city.[19] After the sacking of 1237–1238, HP Pavilion DV6-6070CA Battery

when the Mongols burned the city to the ground and killed its inhabitants, Moscow recovered and became the capital of the independent Vladimir-Suzdal principality in 1327.[20] Its favorable position on the headwaters of the Volga River contributed to steady expansion. HP Pavilion DV6-6155CA BatteryUnlike other principalities, Moscow was not divided among his sons, but was passed intact to his eldest. Moscow's opposition against foreign domination grew. Climate[edit]

Main article: Climate of Moscow

Moscow has a humid continental climate (Köppen climate classification Dfb) with warm humid summers and long, cold winters. Weather can fluctuate widely with temperatures ranging from −25 °C (−13 °F) to above 0 °C (32 °F) Sony PCG-61714L Battery

Sony PCG-71914L Battery in the winter and from 15 °C (59 °F) to 30 °C (86 °F) in the summer.[31] Typical high temperatures in the warm months of June, July and August are around a comfortable 20 °C (68 °F) to 26 °C (79 °F), but during heat waves (which can occur between May and September), daytime high temperatures often exceed 30 °C (86 °F), Sony PCG-61813L Battery

Sony PCG-71913L Batterysometimes for a week or a two at a time. In the winter, night-time temperatures normally drop to approximately −10 °C (14 °F), though there can be periods of warmth with temperatures rising above 0 °C (32 °F). The highest temperature ever recorded was 38.2 °C (100.8 °F)[32]
Sony PCG-71912L Batteryat the VVC weather station and 39.0 °C (102.2 °F) in the center of Moscow and Domodedovo airport on July 29, 2010 during the unusual 2010 Northern Hemisphere summer heat wave. Record high temperatures were recorded for January, March, April, May, August, November and December in 2007.[33] Sony PCG-61911L Battery

Sony PCG-71911L BatteryThe average July temperature from 1981–2010 is 19.2 °C (66.6 °F). The lowest ever recorded temperature was −42.2 °C (−44.0 °F) in January 1940. Snow, which is present for three to five months a year, often begins to fall at the end of November and melts by mid-March. Sony PCG-61913L Battery

Sony PCG-71811L Battery

On average Moscow has 1731 hours of sunshine per year, varying between a low of 8% in December to 52% in May–August.[34] Between 2004–2010, the average was between 1800 and 2000 hours with a tendency to more sunshine in summer months.[35] Sony PCG-71614L Battery

Moscow, being in the middle latitudes of the northern hemisphere, is a place with the most expressed signs of global warming. Sony SVE141C11L Battery
Thus the climate becomes less stable, but the average yearly temperature is growing. So, the period from July until the beginning of August has become considerably warmer. During this time periods of extreme heat are often observed in the city (2001, Sony SVE141D11L Battery

Jews began to settle in Moscow around the 17th century. In the 19th as the Pale of Settlement was instructed Jews were forbidden to settle in the city except for those who served in the army and after their end of service allowed to stay in the city. In 1848 there were 313 Jews in Moscow. In 1861, during the reign of Tsar Alexander II, Sony SVE151G11L Battery

Nevertheless, after the assassination of Alexander II in 1881, a more radical policy was adopted towards the Jews- Jewish enrollment was restricted in schools and universities and in 1891 all Jews were forced out of Moscow. Sony SVE171C11L Battery

Sony PCG-71217L Battery

After the Russian revolution in 1917 the pale of settlement was abolished and Jews were permitted to settle again in the city, many of whom were refugees. In the 1920s and 30s, the state promoted Yiddish-language arts and literature in an effort to influence its Jewish citizens.
Sony PCG-71218L BatteryThis resulted in a brief, rich cultural flourishing exemplified by the famed Moscow State Yiddish Theatre, whose inaugural production (1921) was a staging of Sholem Aleichem's stories with sets by Marc Chagall. In 1939 there were around 250,000 Jews in Moscow.[45] Sony SVE171E11L Battery

During WWII many Jews fled to inner parts of the Soviet Union but most of them returned at the end of the war and by 1970 there were again around 250,000 Jews in Moscow. Sony SVE171E12L Battery

After the collapse of the Soviet Union most of Jews immigrated from the city. in that period there was a revival of Jewish religious life, the leading bodies of Russia’s Jewish organizations were centered in Moscow and a number of synagogues re-opened. Sony SVE171G112 Battery

Religion[edit]

Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, demolished during the Soviet period, was reconstructed during 1990–2000.

Christianity is the predominant religion in the city, of which the Russian Orthodox Church is the most popular. Moscow is Russia's capital of Orthodox Christianity. It has been the country’s traditional religion and was deemed a part of Russia's "historical heritage" in a law passed in 1997.[47] Sony PCG-71318L Battery

Sony PCG-61317L BatteryOther religions practiced in Moscow include Islam, Rodnovery, Protestantism, Catholicism, Old Believers, Buddhism, and Judaism.

The Patriarch of Moscow serves as the head of the church and resides in the Danilov Monastery. Moscow was called the "city of 40 times 40 churches"—"город сорока сороков церквей"—prior to 1917. In 1918 Russia became a secular state and religion lost its position in society. Since the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991 many of the destroyed churches have been restored and traditional religions are once again gaining popularity. Sony PCG-71211L Battery

Sony PCG-61316L Battery

Muslims constitute 4% of the population, around 1.2–1.5 million.[48] There are four mosques in the city.

Moscow's architecture is world-renowned. Moscow is also well known as the site of Saint Basil’s Cathedral, with its elegant onion domes, as well as the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and the Seven Sisters. The first Kremlin was built in the middle of the twelfth century. Sony PCG-71212L Battery

Sony PCG-61315L Battery

Medieval Moscow's design was of concentric walls and intersecting radial thoroughfares. This layout, as well as Moscow's rivers, helped shape Moscow's design in subsequent centuries.

The Kremlin was rebuilt in the 15th Century. Its towers and some of its churches were built by Italian architects, lending the city some of the aura of the renaissance. Sony PCG-71215L Battery

Sony PCG-61312L BatteryFrom the end of the 15th century, the city was embellished by increasing numbers of masonry structures such as monasteries, palaces, walls, towers, and churches.

The city's appearance had not changed much by the eighteenth century. Houses were made of pine and spruce logs,
Sony PCG-61311L Batterywith shingled roofs plastered with sod or covered by birch bark. The rebuilding of Moscow in the second half of the eighteenth century was necessitated not only by constant fires, but also the needs of the nobility. Much of the wooden city was replaced by buildings in the classical style.[50] Sony PCG-71216L Battery

For much of its architectural history, Moscow was dominated by Orthodox churches. However, the overall appearance of the city changed drastically during Soviet times, especially as a result of Joseph Stalin's large-scale effort to "modernize" Moscow. Sony PCG-61211L Battery
Sony PCG-61215L Battery Stalin's plans for the city included a network of broad avenues and roadways, some of them over ten lanes wide, which, while greatly simplifying movement through the city, were constructed at the expense of a great number of historical buildings and districts. Among the many casualties of Stalin's socialist reforms was the Sukharev Tower, Sony PCG-3B1L Battery

a longtime city landmark, as well as numerous mansions and commercial buildings lining the major streets. The city's newfound status as the capital of a deeply secular, totalitarian nation, made religiously significant buildings especially vulnerable to demolition. While the later Stalinist period was characterized by the curtailing of creativity and architectural innovation, the earlier post-revolutionary years saw a plethora of radical new buildings created in the city. Especially notable were the constructivist architects associated with VKHUTEMAS,
Sony PCG-3H2L Batteryresponsible for such landmarks as Lenin's Mausoleum. Another prominent architect was Vladimir Shukhov, famous for Shukhov Tower, just one of many hyperboloid towers designed by Shukhov. It was built between 1919 and 1922 as a transmission tower for a Russian broadcasting company.[ Sony PCG-3D3L Battery

Sony PCG-3H1L Battery52] Shukhov also left a lasting legacy to the Constructivist architecture of early Soviet Russia. He designed spacious elongated shop galleries, most notably the GUM department store on Red Square,[52] bridged with innovative metal-and-glass vaults. Sony PCG-3D4L Battery

Perhaps the most recognizable contributions of the Stalinist period are the so-called Seven Sisters, comprising seven massive skyscrapers scattered throughout the city at about an equal distance from the Kremlin. A defining feature of Moscow’s skyline, Sony PCG-3E3L Battery
Sony PCG-3F1L Battery
their imposing form was allegedly inspired by the Manhattan Municipal Building in New York City, and their style—with intricate exteriors and a large central spire—has been described as Stalinist Gothic architecture. Sony PCG-3G3L Battery which, when it was completed in 1967, was the highest free-standing land structure in the world and today remains the world’s seventy-second tallest, ranking among buildings such as the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, Taipei 101 in Taiwan and the CN Tower in Toronto.[53

The Soviet goal (never met) of providing housing for every family, and the rapid growth of Moscow's population, led to the construction of large, monotonous housing blocks. These can often be identified by age, sturdiness of construction, or ‘style’ depending on the neighborhood and the materials used. Sony PCG-3F3L Battery
Sony PCG-3F4L Battery Most of these date from the post-Stalin era and the styles are often named after the leader then in power (Brezhnev, Khrushchev, etc.). They are usually badly maintained.

Stalinist-era buildings, mostly found in the central part of the city, are massive and usually ornamented with Socialist realism motifs that imitate classical themes. However, small churches – almost always Eastern Orthodox– found across the city provide glimpses of its past. Sony PCG-813L Battery preserves most of its buildings from prior to the 20th century. Attempts are being made to restore many of the city’s best-kept examples of pre-Soviet architecture. These restored structures are easily spotted by their bright new colors and spotless façades. There are a few examples of notable, early Soviet avant-garde work too, Sony PCG-7161L Battery

Sony PCG-7182L Battery Later examples of interesting Soviet architecture are usually marked by their impressive size and the semi-Modernist styles employed, such as with the Novy Arbat project, familiarly known as “false teeth of Moscow” and notorious for the wide-scale disruption of a historic area in central Moscow involved in the project. As much as a third of historic Moscow has been destroyed in the past few years[56] to make space for luxury apartments and hotels.[57] Other historical buildings, including such landmarks as the 1930 Moskva hotel and the 1913 department store Voyentorg, Sony PCG-51113L Battery

Sony PCG-81411L Battery have been razed and reconstructed anew, with the inevitable loss of historical value. Critics also blame the government for not enforcing conservation laws: in the last 12 years more than 50 buildings with monument status were torn down, several of those dating back to the 17th century.[5Sony PCG-51211L Battery

Sony PCG-81314L Battery8] Some critics also wonder if the money used for the reconstruction of razed buildings could not be used for the renovation of decaying structures, which include many works by architect Konstantin Melnikov[59] and Mayakovskaya metro station.

Some organizations, Sony PCG-51311L Battery

Moscow's road system is centered roughly around the Kremlin at the heart of the city. From there, roads generally span outwards to intersect with a sequence of circular roads ("rings").

The first and innermost major ring, Bulvarnoye Koltso (Boulevard Ring), was built at the former location of the 16th century city wall around what used to be called Bely Gorod (White Town).[20] Dell XPS 15 Battery

Dell Inspiron N4030 BatteryThe Bulvarnoye Koltso is technically not a ring; it does not form a complete circle, but instead a horseshoe-like arc that begins at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and ends at the Yauza River. Dell XPS 15D Battery

The Russian capital's specific town-planning development began to show as early as the 12th century, when the city was founded. The first circular defence walls set the trajectory of Moscow's rings, laying the groundwork for the future town-planning of the Russian capital.
